Helping you tame your inner socio

can music soothe the socio’s soul?

Does a sociopath have a soul?  I want to say no but as a part-time aspiring sociopath, I know I have a soul. I have evil thoughts (that I don’t usually act upon) and I have kind ones (that I don’t always act upon) LOL. But when the evil ones are taking over and I’m close to the abyss of sociopathic maniacal rage, can music soothe my soul?

Here’s the scenario, there is someone who is robbing you of hours of your life. It could be that they are just very selfish and stupid with their demands, personally or professionally, it could be either.  There is something you have to do, and NO, you can’t get out of doing it, no matter how much you try. So, you do it. And do it and do it some more.  You’ve already explained it and now you must explain again, ad nauseum.

While you’re completing this useless, pointless, (did I say pointless enough?) task the rage is building. You could bite the head off of tiny, cute animals, (of course you wouldn’t) but you kind of think you could and not feel bad about it (until maybe later). How do you calm yourself down?  Can you calm yourself down? Well, here’s what I do so that I don’t jump off that ledge….MUSIC.

I have a playlist; I call it NAMASTE.  It’s on my Spotify and when I need a calm moment, I play it.  FYI- I played while I wrote this. It’s not that whiney, soft ballad style music, it’s a combination of oldies, newbies and songs that evoke a happy memory in my life.

For example, a few years back I took a great car trip and drove down the coast of California from San Francisco to Huntington Beach with my BFF, best trip ever! Our theme song for that trip was Hotel California. When I hear that song I think of the great time I had with my BFF.  We stopped in Monterey, (beautiful beach town) had wine (she had) and cheese (I had) in Big Sur, saw some beautiful ocean views, stayed in a grandma like hotel, right down to the flowery comfy couch and old lady lamps in the parlor, in Santa Maria (like Columbus’ famous ships, the Nina, the Pina and the Santa Maria).( But did you know those names are mostly fake!)

Nothing was planned except the location start and location finish; everything in between was spontaneous. Best way to travel if you have the time! We finally wound up in Huntington Beach (Surf City USA!) at a board meeting I was attending. After about 6 hours of driving on the famous Pacific Coast Highway (at that point it was in my own words “so beautiful I could puke” ) we moved over to the faster highway route where you did not have the views, or the bridges built for only one car!

Ok, let’s end the reminiscing and get back to the point of this story.  MUSIC TO SOOTHE YOUR SOCIOPATHIC SOUL.  It works, it really does as I sit here finishing my story, I am definitely calmer, still have a little anger in me that I’ll save for the meeting I have later about this pointless, pointless, pointless task that I have to do, (did I say pointless enough?) But the urge to bite the heads off of tiny little animals is definitely gone and kind of grossing me out that I thought I could actually do something like that. HA!

As much as we try, that sociopathic anger exists in many people and the way to keep yourself sane and live your life is to find a way to self-soothe because when you wake up in the morning at 3am and you are already mad, you’re probably going to have to find a way to help yourself because you most likely can’t “phone a friend” at 3 am.

Tell me what songs you use or would use for your own “NAMASTE” playlist. Do they evoke good memories of past trips or fun things you have done in your past?  Tell me about those trips too. I will share my NAMASTE playlist with you and please share yours with me too.
